HONORS DIVISION (Ages 12 - 18)

The Honors Division is open to students ages 12-18 with more advanced skills and a desire for an intensive musical experience. These students are chosen based on auditions and teacher recommendation, with preference given to older students. Instruments included in the Honors Division are: 

                Session I: strings, winds, piano and percussion

                Session II: strings and piano.


OVERVIEW

  • Honors Symphonic Orchestra (Session I) or Beethoven Honors Orchestra (Session II), conducted by Dr. Marilyn Seelman


  • Intensive Chamber Music Ensembles or Chamber Music Seminar Classes, in which musicians study and perform great works of chamber music under the guidance of professional coaches


  • Daily sectional rehearsals and opportunities to perform in a masterclass led by members of the NC Symphony and professional chamber musicians


  • Community outreach performance opportunities for chamber ensembles in addition to public Honors concert and Orchestral concert that concludes camp

Honors Symphonic Orchestra for Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Piano and Percussion


Students must be very advanced to audition for this select group. Advanced technical ability, sight-reading ability and musicianship emphasis will be the focal points for these musicians.


* All Honors Symphonic Orchestra applicants are required to audition on one of the Honors audition dates.

Honors string players will have extended hours to accommodate chamber music coachings and orchestral rehearsals. Please refer to “Schedule” page for specific camp hours.


  • Track 1: Strings are placed in an Intensive Chamber Ensemble coached by a professional musician


  • Track 2: Strings participate in Chamber Music Seminar and Musicianship classes, which may include Alexander Technique, Audition Preparation, and Technique classes


  • All Honors strings play in the Honors Symphonic Orchestra (Session I) or Beethoven Honors Orchestra (Session II)

Winds, Brass, and Percussion (Session I only)

Advanced woodwind and brass players may audition for a half-day or full-day camp option during Session I. Percussionists may apply for half-day options only.  Contact Jimmy Gilmore at jimmyclarinet@gmail.com for more information.


  • Full-day option: Winds and brass play in the Honors Symphonic Orchestra and are in Chamber Music and Musicianship classes, extending the camp day longer than regular camp. Please refer to “Schedule” page for specific camp hours.


  • Half-day option: Winds and brass play in the Honors Symphonic Orchestra and participate in sectional rehearsals, but will not participate in chamber ensembles

Piano

Advanced pianists may audition for half-day or full-day camp options. This is a fun, unique and enriching experience open to a limited number of pianists!


  • Chamber Music half-day option: Pianists are placed in Intensive Chamber Ensembles, coached by professional musicians, culminating with the Honors Concerts on Thursday afternoon

         *Half-day students pay a lower fee 


  • Orchestral half-day option: Pianists rehearse and perform with the Honors Orchestra, as well as receiving 2 private lessons or classes, concluding with the Friday morning Final Concert 

          *Half-day students pay a lower fee 


  • Full-day option: Pianists rehearse and perform with the Honors Orchestra and are placed in an Intensive Chamber Ensemble, as well as receiving 2 private lessons and additional classes
